We have been serving our clients for the last 40 years. This is the strong foundation that every member of the practice takes pride in.
JP Sear & Marsh resulted from a merger of two firms: Varcoes Pty Ltd and Sear & Marsh:
Varcoes
Varcoes originally started as a suburban taxation practice serving individual and small business clients assisting them in Income Tax law compliance.
The practice found a strong base between 1988 and 2003 at the former business premises located at 199 Riversdale Road, Hawthorn. Under the leadership of Tony Jolley and Tony Polzella who have been with the practice since 1988 and 1997 respectively, the firm saw a steady increase in the number of new clients, exceptional client retention rates and an increase in the number of services the practice offered to match increased compliance requirements of businesses (introduction of GST for example).
As a result of this growth and outgrowing the premises at Riversdale Road, we moved to our current business premises, we moved to new business premises at Suite 9, 13 Church Street, Hawthorn in 2003.
From 2003 the firm has seen a steady and ever increasing growth rate in every division of the business. Coupled with a positive response from existing and new clients, we were motivated to take our quality and service to even higher levels.
In 2008 we added ‘Financial Planning’ to our list of client services. We appointed independent financial planners: Catalyst Financial Group, to operate from our premises and offer in-house appointments for our clients. We are constantly working and improving the practice to be better at what we do and we cannot thank our clients and network associates enough for their support and encouragement.
Sear & Marsh
Sear & Marsh had its start in 1983, when Jonathan Sear commenced practice in Auburn Rd, Hawthorn. The main focus at the start was helping small businesses grow and along the way assist them with their taxation planning and compliance. This focus has continued. The practice grew along with our clients, as they expanded into bigger and more diverse businesses. This growth caused the move to larger premises at 95A Riversdale Rd, Hawthorn where we stayed for 24 years. We know a lot of our clients will miss that noisy old building and its charms!
With our clients’ success, along with an increasingly complex taxation system came a greater demand for a more varied range of services. A substantial increase in the number of clients and their needs meant the firm had to expand and Carol Marsh joined us as a partner in 2000. The growth has accelerated and we have enjoyed many referrals from long-standing and happy clients. It has been particularly pleasing to welcome their children and in-laws as clients.
We value and thank our loyal and long-serving staff, our clients and we value our role in their businesses and lives. We have had a lot of laughs and happy times at 95A Riversdale Road but it is time to move on to the next stage.

On 1st July 2010, Varcoes merged with Sear & Marsh to become JP Sear & Marsh.
